Negative Self Image
Do negative self-beliefs impact your thoughts, emotions, and actions?
What are the symptoms?
When you suffer from negative self-image, you often have a negative belief about yourself that affects your thinking, feeling, and behavior. This can come from unpleasant experiences in the past. A negative self-image can make you pretty insecure and hinder you in various aspects of life, including in social and professional situations. It can affect your self-confidence and make you think you’re doing things wrong or bothering others. This negative filter affects how you look at yourself, which can make it difficult to take on challenges and make choices. A negative self-image can also have unpleasant consequences and lead to some kind of diagnosed disorder.
Some characteristics of a negative self-image are:
1 | You think there's something wrong with yourself |
2 | You think you're not capable |
3 | You feel like you're different |
4 | You think badly or negatively about yourself |
5 | You look at yourself and others with self-reproach and criticism |
6 | You're ashamed of yourself (I'm bad) |
7 | You feel guilty (I did something wrong) |
8 | You harm yourself |
9 | You have questions about your identity (Who am I?) |

How does a negative self-image arise and what are the consequences?
A negative self-image often comes from an unpleasant experience that has caused you to develop negative thoughts about yourself. It may take a while for these negative thoughts to develop into a negative self-image. Hereditary predisposition can also play a role in this, although a specific cause can rarely be identified.
However, a negative self-image can also have unpleasant consequences. If you do nothing to overcome your insecurity, your negative self-image will affect you time and time again. This can lead to psychological problems, such as fear of failure, social anxiety, eating disorders, gloominess, and depression. It is therefore important to actively work on improving your self-image and learning how to turn these negative thoughts into more positive thoughts about yourself.
How can I help you?
We will first work together to identify what the issues are. We will then work on understanding their cause(s) and providing insight into them. We will find out what meaning they have in your life and how you would like to see your life differently. A lot of people think that they’re born that way, but that’s wrong. No one is born with a negative self-image.
Together we will investigate which underlying factors contribute to your negative self-image. My years of experience and my specialized education have already allowed me to help many clients to reconnect with themselves and others based on trust and equality. I look forward to helping you with this.
